Will be staying in Munich in July and need to get to Heidenheim around noon, and then returning to Munich around 10pm on a Wedensday.
What is the travel time? And will there still be plenty of trains that time of the evening?
Thanks in advance.

If arrival at 12:35 in Heidenheim and departure at 21:00 would be OK for you - you could to this trip for much less:
1. Bavaria Ticket Single EUR 19,00
2. 2 x Ulm - Heidenheim à EUR 7,20 (DING/htv tariff)
= EUR 33,40
Both tickets cover only regional trains. There are connections needing 2:45 - not that much more than the far distance trains. But the Bavaria Ticket is only valid past 9am on a weekday - thus the later arrival. And for the return trip you have to start at 21:00 if using local trains only. For the last connection departing at 21:57 you will need to use an ICE to Munich. All later connection will be only with arrival early morning in Munich and some hours spent in or before railway stations in the night.
Both tickets (1. and 2.) do cover - unlike normal p2p train tickets - all local public transport. U-Bahn, trams and buses in Munich and buses in Heidenheim.

Make sure that you purchase your return ticket Heidenheim to Ulm in pleny of time before departure. Otherwise, if you come at the last moment and there are problems with the ticket machine you cannot just get on and purchase a ticket from the conductor as there is no conductor, and riders without tickets are subject to big fines if caught.
