Hohenschonhausen

We have booked five nights in an apartment in Berlin Mitte, but a German friend has recommended an apartment in Hohenschonhausen at half the cost. We do not know Berlin at all and would like advice on this please?

Hohenschonhausen is quite a way out of central Berlin, however it is well connected by tram and S-bahn. It would probably take you about 30 minutes to the former eastern areas and 45 mins to the former west..It may not quite have the amjbience you are looking for - it is mainly a modern development of blocks of flats built by the DDR.There are plenty of facilities such as a shopping centre but not a great deal of tourist attractions. In its favour the local people (with the odd exception) are charming and helpful - I think they are slightly bemused by why people should want to visit what is in effect a residential area! .

I agree with the previous writer.- I went to a Berlin Icebear hockey game there. The arena was old but the spirit was excellent. On hockey nights the area was alive. I took the tram from Alexanderplatz it took perhaps 20-30 min. It is a real neighborhood not much tourist attractions but there were plenty of cafes and resteraunts. It isn%26#39;t bad considering it is half price for you. If you can stand the tram rides and settle for a little less excitement why not??

Hi,

Hohenschoenhausen is not that bad but it%26#39;s certainly the last plast I would like to stay if I was a tourist. It%26#39;s far from everything and it%26#39;s like dead in evenings and at weekends (with few exceptions).

I would definitely spend some more Euros to stay in Mitte. It%26#39;s worth it!

;-)

Weighing up the pros and cons I think we will stay in the Berlin Mitte apartment. Thank you for your input everyone.

It looks like you have made your decision but I still want to let you know that I fully agree with solid8 when it comes to Hohenschönhausen.

Incidentally Hohenschönhausen is also where the Stasi prison and other %26quot;facilities%26quot; were, now a memorial site (Gedenkstätte).

Even apart from these grim associations why stay so far out of the city centre if sightseeing is main aim (same is true of Grünewald although surroundings are completely different). Staying in Mitte most sights are walkable.

Does your German friend know Berlin?
