Climbing the Zugspitze

Hi

We are hoping to climb the Zugspitze on 20th June. Would anyone know of any websites that give info on the routes etc that would be in English, have found a lot in German which I unfortunately cannot read!

Thanks ;-)

I don%26#39;t want to question your alpine experience, but I hope you%26#39;ve got an idea what you%26#39;re up to. If you want to hike up without the use of cable cars you%26#39;re looking at a 7-8 hours climb (2200m altitude difference) including a fixed rope route and crossing of a glacier. People that walk up usually take the cable car down (because to do up and down in a day you%26#39;d have to start REALLY early), or they do it as a 2 day trip and stay the night in the Höllentalanger-Hütte. Climbing spurs for the glacier part are highly recommended. If you%26#39;re not that experienced think of going with a guided tour.

The %26#39;shortest%26#39; tour is from Hammersbach through the Höllentalklamm to the Höllentalanger-Hütte. This part is quite spectacular and easy and makes a good trip of its own. From there a trail goes to the summit in about 4-6 hours, there%26#39;s climbing and ice involved and parts of the route are quite exposed. Proper hiking boots are essential, don%26#39;t even think of going with trainers.

You need to be really fit to make this tour in one day. Otherwise this is a two day tour.

It%26#39;s difficult to give suggestions without knowing about your Alpine experience. If you%26#39;ve none it%26#39;s definitly the wrong mountain. Even for the easy route because of the really exhausting 2.200 meters altitude difference.

The Höllental Klettersteig (the fixed rope route) is a famous tour, but of the category %26quot;C%26quot; (= difficult). Only for experienced and fit mountain hikers. Real rock climbing experience is however not necessary. One of the most difficult tours I ever made (and I made it to a number of higher mountains).

And also only with stable good weather conditions.

Hi

Thanks for your responses. We do have some experience and will have hiking boots. We were aiming to start early on the easy route and come back down on the cable car. We both have good level of fitness.

However we have not climbed on glaciers before and would not have ice shoes. We can probably go some of the way and hook up with the cable cars. Would have no problem joining a group.

Thanks again ;-)

The %26#39;easy%26#39; way goes through the Partnachklamm - Bockhütte- Reintalangerhütte- Knorrhütte- Zugspitze, this is also doable for less experienced hikers and would probably not need climbing spurs (no glacier on this route). It%26#39;s 23 km, 2200m altitude difference, 9.5 to 10 hours, the last part from the Schneeferner to the summit can also be done by cable car. Good luck (and may the force be with you :=))
