Mitte, or the centre of the city has nearly everything right on your doorstep.

everything in its entirity around berlin is within a very easy and cheap trip via the U- and S- Bahn. the transport network is fantastic and second to none, generally all lines run either all night or to 2am and starting at 4am (or similar).

my recommendations include -

The Reichstag and tiergarten, both of which are a few minutes walk from the Brandenburg Gate.

Postdamerplatz and the Topography of terror for shopping and then some berlin wall/ war museum stuff.

Museum Island and Alexanderplatz (behind the old communist parliament, a brown glass building.

the local german food is robust, filling and decent, if not haute cuisine in the classical french model. Turkish food, especially the street cafes are great snack food, and italian food is widespread and exellent too. the beer is the best in the world, and i%26#39;ve heard the local/german wine is reasonable.

berlinners generally are friendly, dilligent and hardworking, calm and willing to help, usually in flawless english, if you have a problem.

berlin is almost frighteningly clean and efficient, but this comes as such a nice, welcome break from the UK, you%26#39;ll feel totally at ease quickly.

there is far too much to do in berlin, even if you were there for a month, so read the guides and guide books, and choose what you really want to do.

hope that helps to give you a start to the background. have a read around the forum and site and you should be fine.

hi.

you%26#39;ll be in the middle of everything.just bring with you a pair of comfy shoes!there is sio many things to see.

I really love Berlin but think Spudfish is seeing it through rose-tinted glasses as lots of Berlin is quite scruffy in fact and graffiti is very prevalent (just like Barcelona , there are books dedicated to these things). And once you get out of the tourist centre there are parts not that different from Bolton (I know Bolton, used to shop there, living in Bury). Spudfish if you go to Pankstrasse in Wedding, on U-8 line and look around, you%26#39;ll see a different Berlin (just one example). Even in the heart of Mitte you see these contrasts of old and new, that%26#39;s a lot of the appeal.

And I wouldn%26#39;t bank on the flawless English either except in tourist facilities. However all sights, museums, public transport etc do have signing and displays in English.

Having said all that, Mitte is the heart of Berlin and is a brilliant place to stay as most of the sights are then within walking distance.

Everything!!! Mitte is cool for both its contrasts of the present and the past. From yuppies and prostitutes to capitalists and communists...

there%26#39;s alot to see around Oranienstrasse. Also, take the New Berlin Pub Crawl and their free walking tours from Zoo station or the Gate.
