10 hours in Cologne

Some suggestions please - stay in the city? Hop on a train and go to a nearby city?

Bonn is not far by train. It is a smaller, more manageable city to visit for a short time. It has an interesting old town, and long cultural history in addition to being the former capital. That said, a short visit to the Cologne cathedral and the adjoining Roman museum. full of artifacts from Cologne%26#39;s ancient history, is easily done. Both are right next to the Hauptbahnhof.

I agree that Bonn is very managable to do in one day and they have an excellent modern german history museum (WWI and after) that is free: Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland

Between Cologne and Bonn is Bruehl. This is a fantastic small town that has a beautiful and well preserved palace and palace grounds. There is a wonderfully manicured garden with fountains alongside and a forest full of very tall trees behind that. The town itself is sleepy and a great place to take a break for ice cream.

If you do decide to stay in Cologne, it is fun to treck up the 590 stairs to the top of the Dom. The view is not fantastic as Cologne is not a breathtakingly beautiful city, however, the top of the Dom itself is quite lovely. If you are in the mood for ice cream as well - the best ice cream is Eis Colonia near the Appelhofplatz U-Bahn stop. It is as close to Italian gelato as one might find in the city.

Have fun!
