Silly question ,but where do you store your luggage on the train ? (with you or a hold) Is the luggage secure? Sorry but not a clue

It depends on the railcar.
In general, there are storage racks above the seats. That is the most secure place. Some railcars on long-distance service have areas near the doors where you can store luggage. Obviously, unless you can see the area, it is less secure. In some cars, where seats are back-to-back there is a space between the seats where you can slip a suitcase.
Most trains only stop at an intermediate station for a couple of minutes. So, you need to get your bags and be ready to get off the train when it stops.

It is not always the same, as Teleport indicated. We were disappointed that a couple newer Regional Express trains that we rode in Bavaria did not have room above the seat for even a wheeled airline carry-on suitcase. Once we stored it in an open area near the exit, and sat close enough to keep an eye on it. Another time, we stored it behind a seat up the aisle from us. On another fairly empty train, we sat the luggage in the seat next to us.
One German lady just stuck hers in the aisle. A man with limited vision and white cane tripped over it. She gave him a very dirty look. I do not think that I could go along with that.
Regards, Gary
