My son is at the University in Leipzig for 2 months. He left Saturday, and we are trying to fly his fiancee over there for a week. When I am researching flights, the Cologne flight is much cheaper. How far is this to Leipzig. Thanks so much. I really have no idea what I am doing.

Cologne is 500km from Leipzig, roughly 300miles.
Cologne airport is a base for Germanwings a German budget operator so the easiest thing wd be to see if they do flights to Leipzig.
Alternatively train times on www.diebahn.de (but fare is likely to be as expensive as flight.)
