German Holidays

In planning my trip to Berlin, it looks like I might be there during a state holiday, Tag der Deutschen Einheit (German Unity Day).

For those in position to answer this, should I expect most museums, etc. to be closed on that day? I have some flexibility in my dates just now, and if most museums and so forth are closed I might change my itinerary a bit.

(I will visit the Reichstag website, but if anyone knows whether the building and dome are closed that day, the info would help)

Thanks.

All museums are open as usual on Unification Day. There is usually a big street fair near the Reichstag and most shops will be closed.

Reichstag dome and roof terrace will be closed all day on 24 December 2007 and from 16.00 hrs on 31 December 2007.

Plus 5 times through the year for maintance/cleaning.

On 3rd October it will be open.

Actually the same with museums. They are open on public holidays. Even if they are closed normally on Mondays, they are mostly open if this is public holiday.

There are only 2 times were nearly everything will shut down in Germany. Lastest on early afternoon on Christmas Eve (24. December) and Silvester (NYE 31. December).

Both days are however not public holidays.

Thanks very much to you both! This is very helpful in planning my itinerary.

Yes, window-cleaning at the dome can screw up your plans and I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s announced all that far in advance.

2 years ago just after Easter I was in Berlin with a school group who landed Sunday morning. The original idea had been to do Reichstag dome later in the week but discovery a month before that window-cleaning was scheduled from the Monday (all week) meant we headed straight there once they%26#39;d left stuff at hotel.

Tag der Deutschen Einheit is not just a state holiday, it%26#39;s a public holiday nationwide. Unlike in the US all grocery stores, all other stores will be closed completely. Keep that in mind when buying some bottled water etc. the day before.
