We have a large group traveling through Frankfurt with an 18 hour layover.
What can we do relatively close to the airport and how much does it cost to get around?

Hi,
if you are not too tired, Frankfurt has a few attraction worth visiting, but if you don%26#39;t make it to the city, there is not too much you missed.
Getting to the city is fairly easy and relatively cheap. Take the train from the regional train station to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (main train station) or Hauptwache (a subway stop in the heart of the city).
Place worth visitng for your short time here:
Römer with its rebuild townhouse and medival building, the Old Opera and Fressgasse to stroll along its restaurants and bars. Fares are 3,55€ one way, I think.

Frankfurt city (walking) tour leaflet

You can travel by S-Bahn S8 or S9 from Terminal 1 to the Hauptbahnhof (main railway station - 11 min.) or to Hauptwache stop (mid of the city centre, next to the main shopping street %26quot;Zeil%26quot;, #18 on the map on the leaflet, 15 min.).
Single ticket is EUR 3,55. A mini group (2-5 persons) day ticket is EUR 13,40. With these ticket you can travel to any train/U-Bahn/tram/bus stop in Frankfurt.
Alternative: Mainz

Frankfurt Airport is between Mainz and Frankfurt.
Travel time is approx. 30 minutes. Ticket prices are the same.
Mainz is more typical for a German city than Frankfurt.
