Where in Bavara/ Baden Wurtemburg PLEASE

Hi.

Next month my husband and driving through southern Germany for 10 days. We are aiming for Salzburg. Please can anyone give us top tips on places we should stop ???

We enjoy walking (not hiking), architecture, scenery and food

We will spend all of the first day driving and aim for the Stuttgart area. We would like to spend around 3-4 days near Salzburg taking in city, Halstatt, ice cave and saltmine and eagles nest. Maybe boat trip on Konigsee.

Thoughts we had were Lindau, Schwangau, Mittenwald, Salzburg, Munich, Regensburg or Rothenburg ... then home.

Is this overambitous?? Alpine road on maps are always deceptive!

Regards

Rather than aiming for Stuttgart, why not head for Wuerzburg? Spend the night there and visit this nice city, with itrs castle overlpokking the Main river and the city, an the downtown Residenz palace with its lovely gardens for walking. In late afternoon head for Rothenburg, about 2 hrs. by car. Toward late afternoon of that day head for Fuessen /Schwangau. That%26#39;s about 2 1/2 on the A-7 Autobahn.

Then ytou have to decide: You can drive to Salzburg via Garmisch, Mittenwald, Zirl, Innsbruck by-pass on the A-12 to the Oberaudorf exit, from there head east to Walchsee, Koessen, Reit im Winkel and from there on the B-305 (Deutsche Alpenstrasse) to Berchtesgaden and Salzburg. All very scenic, with possible stops for some walking.

Or you can drive from Garmisch to Munich on the Autobahn, and on the Autobahn to Salzburg. This is faster. but less scenic. You could stop en route in Prien and take the boat from Stock to the Herrenchiemsee Isdland and King Ludwig%26#39;s palace. It%26#39;s a nice walkj from thne boat landing toi the palace and the surrounding gardens.

Enough has been written about Hallstatt, Kehlksteinhaus (aka Eagle%26#39;s Nest) in other posts, so I need not comment

After Salzburg, you could head toward Passau, along the Danube to Regensburg and then back home, all on Autobahns.

Lindau is a bit out of the way, unless you decide to go Stuttgard - as originally planned - from there to Lindau, and then back to Fuessen and (see above). Th old part of Lindau certainly is very attractive and offers good opportunitoes for walking.

Lindau to Fuessen is quite scenic, via Oberstaufen, Immenstadt, Sonthofen, Hindelang, Oberjoch, Nesselwaengle, Reutte, Weissbach. That trip is about 2 1/2hrs, and you can stop en route alongside some lakes for some walking.

I have driven all the roads I have cited - some many times. They are all very good and not very challenging.

Thankyou for your time and advice,

I think we will take you up on your suggestion and head for Wurzburg.

I have heard alot about the town but thought it was too out of the way. I have just checked a route finder and it claims we should be able to do it in 6.5 hours - Marvellous! and going via Koln rather than Metz will save us quite a bit on the tolls too.

I think we will also miss out Lindau this time. Less is more

I will check out all your other suggestions tomorrow (Uk time)

Great help. Thanks

You might like to check out what I%26#39;ve written on Stuttgart today in the German forum post %26quot;Feedback on our Itinerary (in the works)%26quot;.

Beside the ice cave at Werfen (be sure not to miss it), Werfen also has a very nice castle.

From Stuttgart drive down A81 towards Singen and the follow onto Meersburg and Friedrichshafen (not Konstanz!). Stop in Birnau to visit the breathtaking church, stop in Meersburg for a walk thru the walled old-town and Castle, stop in Friedrichshafen for a coffee or ice cream on the embankment of the lake. The view of the Alpine panoram from Friedrichshafen is the best of all the views of the lake as it%26#39;s just the perfect location. Also the lake there has got exactly the width of the Gibraltar straits. Then follow on to Lindau and have dinner in the harbour! You%26#39;ll love that day!! Cross into Austria to fill up your car. You%26#39;ll save at least 20 cents per litre compared to the Bavarian side. Lindau is a border town, you can%26#39;t miss it.
