Best way to drive Frankfurt to Munich ?

I was using Google Maps to look at how to drive from Fankfurt to Munich. If we stay on the autobahn it says it will take about 4 hours, and we%26#39;ll go via Wuerzburg and Nueremberg. If I check the box that says to avoid highways (autobahn) and we go via Ansbach the distance is a little shorter but it says the driving time is about 6.5 hours!

Why such a difference in driving time? The maps look as if going via Ansbach is a viable solution but we don%26#39;t want to take 6.5 hours to get to Munich. We just thought going the alternate route would be a little more interesting than watching carz zoom on the autobahn.

Any suggestions? We%26#39;ll be tired and jet-lagged after we land in Frankfurt and need to drive to Munich.

Thanks!

loracsivam,

why don%26#39;t you simply rtake the train from Frankfurt airport to Munich and rent a car when you are there? It is not a good idea to drive for so long while jet-lagged.

Time and distance wise it makes little difference whether you drive the A5 from Frankfurt to Karlsruhe and then the A8 to Munich or the A3 to Nuernberg and then the A9 to Munich. The first way you approach Munich from the NW and the second way from the north if that affects your final destination in Munich. I know along the A8 there are a few interesting places signposted to break up your drive and the ascent of the Schwaebische Alb is nice, I really don%26#39;t know about the other route. The best route would be the one with the least construction which I also don%26#39;t know about.

The suggestion to take the train is a good one unless you have slept on your entire flight.

High average speeds on the autobahns. But on this route there is definitly quite some risk of traffic jams.

If you use country roads you have to cross many villages and towns - with lot%26#39;s of speed limits, traffic lights etc. Normally you can make approx. 100 km per hour on the autobahn and 60 km per hour on country roads (but not if this is across uplands).

For a shorter distance country roads can be indeed quite nice, but I never do this for a distance of more than 2 hours.

Train. Car is only an option if you don%26#39;t want to drive far on the first day, e.g. as far as Würzburg.

You need 100% concentration when driving in Germany. Due the high traffic density. The high speeds driven on the autobahns. Or the many crossings and overtaking manoeuvres (active or passive) on country roads (more stressful in the long term). If you%26#39;re tired and jet-lagged and plan to drive such long distances in Germany, you put your and the life of others on risk.

If you can e.g. get a Rail%26amp;Fly ticket, train is also the cheaper way.

Did the Frankfurt -Munich trip twice in the past two years to our final destination in Klagenfurt, Austria (don%26#39;t ask) at the same time of the year, May, and found the trip via Nurnberg and Ingolstadt faster with less road construction, and it was raining. If you think you will be too jet-lagged to drive, don%26#39;t, the roads in Germany are fabulous and efficient but driving is done at a higher speed, and you don%26#39;t need to be falling asleep at the wheel, there are plenty of airport hotels in Frankfurt, we stayed at a Courtyard a few years ago....happy trails :)

In Frankfurt tune your radio to 98.7FM for AFN Europe. You must listen to the traffic advisory. A3 to Würzburg and then A9 via Nuremberg is the shortest route and should take just over 3 hours. BUT A3 is also called Germany%26#39;s longest car park if you see what I mean. If there is a problem on A3 Frankfurt - Nuremberg take A5 to Karlsruhe and A8 via Stuttgart to Munich. Once you%26#39;re in Bavaria tune into 107.4FM for AFN radio.

Leave Frankfurt past 10am and you should be fine and most likely won%26#39;t encounter any major disruption.
