Reservations needed for hotels or B and B's

My husband, daughter and I are traveling for a couple of weeks in July to Germany, Austria and hopefully Switzerland. Most of our time will be in Germany. Since we want this to be a %26quot;non%26quot; rushed trip...enjoying things as we drive...we were wondering do we need to make hotel reservations (since we don;t know where we are going to be on what day) or can we just stop by a hotel and get a room? We are arriving in Frnakfurt..renting a car and heading south...mostly beautiful Bavaria area. Anyt suggestions will help me here. Thank youl

I have travelled quite a bit in Germany and generally its better to make a reservation especially in the summer months

However if you are willing to speak a little German then by all means stay at some of the smaller hotels and you will get a lot better value. I used to pay around 50 euro a night

You perhaps needs to have a look at sites like

www.hotel.de (please look for the English language version)

www.accorhotels.com (Ibis are good value and close to the centre of town)

www.iberohotel.de

www.laterooms.com

Or try the local tourist office

Bavaria is a really nice area and i would recommend Regensburg to the NE of Munich. Augsburg 1 hour west of Munich. Garmish Partenkirken 1 hour south of Munich. Lake Constance (Bodensee) is also a must especially Lindau.

You should also try the lakes around Salzburg (2 1/2 hours from Munich) especially areas like St Wolfgang. There are many more and i dont know how you will fit it all into 2 weeks

You probably won%26#39;t need to make reservations unless you want to stay in a particular place which is heavily visited by tourists. There are many more equally good or better places to visit that will have few tourists. For a nice enjoyable trip visiting places along the way I suggest that you stop in a Shell gas station and purchase the appropriate maps in the large scale (1cm = 1.5km or 1in approximates 4 miles) %26quot;Die Shell Regional Karte%26quot; map series of Germany. Any one map wll have months%26#39; worth of nice things to visit. These maps show all rural roads, churches, monasteries, palaces and castles, vista points, waterfalls, scenic valleys and rivers, etc. The better cultural attractions are highlighted in yellow, and for scenic attractions in green. The very best attractions also have a box around them. Even non-highlighted things can be excellent to visit. You%26#39;ll have an excellent very enjoyable vacation and will %26quot;discover%26quot; some real hidden gems. I%26#39;ll mention just one of them, the idyllic Grosse Lauter River Valley through the Scwaebische Alb (low limestone mountain range) whch has one of the highest concentrations of castle ruins in Germany, and you can canoe on its placid waters. (The Upper Danube west of Sigmaringen is similar).
