We need to rent a car in Munich so we can drive to Italy.
Two questions:
1) What is a good (reputable, speaks English) place to rent a car?
2) Can we rent a car in Germany and return it in Italy, or must we drive back to Germany to return?
Many thanks in advance!

All of the big car rental companies have offices in Munich, however they will charge a large extra fee to drop off a German car in Italy.

Hi,
We always rent at the airport for the convenience. Budget, Hertz, Avis, National, etc. are located there. We actually book through www.travelocity.com. They are %26quot;brokers%26quot; and you%26#39;ll get a car from one of the above companies. Renting in one country and returning in another is expensive. If you plan on renting a car in Germany and driving into Italy, tell the rental company about your plans. In my experiences over the last few years, I%26#39;ve been told by the rental companys that some makes/models of cars are not be be taken into Italy.

Other brokers you may try:
www.gemut.com
www.autoeurope.com
e.g. with AVIS you must not drive with one of their Audi, BMW or Mercedes cars to Italy
It will be cheaper to use the train from Germany to Italy and rent there a car, than to pay the international drop off fee.
Both countries are actually only 60 km from each other (shortest distance).
You could e.g. use the train from Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Rosenheim to Bozen/Bolzano.

1) every internation car rental company has English speaking staff
2) expect to pay 200-500 Euro drop fee, and as mentioned, no luxury car brands
