Hi, all the friendly and resourceful guys here,
I understand from the guidebook that there are different types of restaurants in Germany. Some are high-class, some family-run, some like a pub and some just fast-food type. Can you advise if I have to pay tips after a meal in any of the above type of restaurant and how much should I pay (in terms of euro) ? Further, is service charge already covered in the bill ? When I settle the bill, can I just gesture to the waiter to come over or should I take my bill and settle it at the cash counter ?

There usually is a tip included in the restaurant bill. However, if the service was satisfactory, you may want to round up the bill to the nearest full EURO, or nearest 5 or 10 Euro. The latter you would do more likely in a more expensive restaurant.
As for paymenmt: Again, the most common practice is for the guest to summon the server to the table (%26quot;Bitte Zahlen%26quot;, or %26quot;die Rechnung, bitte%26quot;), and then pay him/her. But be prepared: The most annoying aspect of eating out in Germany is that the servers develop a tin ear when it comes to trying to pay your bill. They are more interested in taking food orders than delivering the bill.

A %26quot;service charge%26quot; is always included in the bill, so you are not obligated to leave an additional tip, but rounding up the bill as previously mentioned is usually done. If you like the service, by all means leave an additional tip. Of course, a fast food restaurant where you order and receive your food at the counter requires no tip. The bill is usually settled at the table, but if things are too slow you can always go up to the cash register where the waiter will be forced to settle the bill.

One additional thing about tipping, tips are usually not left on the table. When paying the bill, just say how much money you want back. For instance, if the bill is 27 euros and you want to leave a 3 euro tip and are paying with a 50 euro bill, just ask for 20 euros back.

Thank you very much ! This is really helpful !!!! Still one more silly thing to ask -- will Germans mind I speak English to them (because I don%26#39;t know any german) ?

Wherever you are in the world it is courteous to be able to say a few words in their language. Hello, Goodbye, Excuse me, and Thank you are a bare minimum and will be appreciated. Many restaurants will have menus in English, and if they do and you are speaking English they probably will automatically bring you one. Because all menu items aren%26#39; necessarily translated properly or have no real English equivalent, you might like to take a small guidebook with food items translated from German, or just xerox a few pages from such a book and take it with you.
