Local cuisine that won't break the bank

My partner and I will be in Munich in early December, and we want to sample as much of the regional German foods as possible. Many of our guidebooks list restaurants that would meet our needs, but too often they are enormously fancy and pricey. Can anyone recommend a more local place where we could sample the local cuisine but not have to dress to the nines and shell out big bucks? Thanks!

My husband and I had dinner last week at the Augustinerbraustuben, in the Hauptbahnhof area : very good local food, local atmosphere (very noisy though) and VERY cheap : I think that our main courses were about 10 euros each ... The Weisses Brauhaus and the Augustinerbrau in the old town are supposed to be quite good and cheap too . I assume that Beergardens are closed in December, but these are good places too ...

You have strange guide books.

Hofbräuhaus

hofbraeuhaus.de/en/01/speisekarte_schwemme_e…

Ratskeller

http://www.ratskeller-muenchen.de/

click on the US flag/Union Jack for the menu in English

Two really famous places. Hofbräuhaus is probably the best known restaurant on this planet.

This places are not fancy at all - for sure. And the prices are also OK. Esp. if you compare it with places as prominent or central located in other European cities.

Of course the previously mentioned Augustinerkeller (and others) has fewer tourists and a slightly better price/value relation.

Hi

Hofbrauhaus for beer, but IMO I would not eat there.

Ratskeller 100% for sure. Very reasonable price and good quality, nice impressive restaurant but casual. Tourists and locals love the place.

Viktualienmarkt just next to Marienplatz is great for %26#39;fast food%26#39; and a local beer garden. Cheap and filling, bavarian food, great atmoshere, you%26#39;ll stay for hours!! LOL

Hackerhaus heading towards Sendliger (5 mins) is also a local

institution. Not expensive, but not as impressive as Ratskeller IMO

but they do have some unique dishes.

Very casual but a bit more expensive is Haxnbauer, just up the road from Marienplatz, before you get to Hofbrauhaus. This is a MUST TRY for Schweinshaxen. Spit roasted pigs knuckle with crackling. You%26#39;ll see 100%26#39;s in the window roasting.

It%26#39;s the best place in the city for this famous dish - don%26#39;t order this dish in Ratskeller as it%26#39;s a poor second best to Haxnbauer.

Have fun - I bet you put on weight :-)

...... sure you could start a whole new thread on who has the best haxen, I used to really enjoy Haxnbauer many moons ago then the prices went up and we felt the quality went down so not been back for years. Last really great one I had was at Paulaner brewery Hochstr, 75,

I%26#39;ve tried a few places (about 10) over the years on 20 odd visits. And once a year I still meet local Bavarians at a trade show - they always say go to Haxnbauer, sometimes we go together. I think it has good atmosphere too.

Yep, a bit pricey and touristy but I%26#39;ve not had better knuckle myself.

Perhaps the Munich locals could chip in with some ideas and a vote for the best...:-) Don%26#39;t you wish we could get crackling like that in U.K. !!

A fun site is

www.haxentest.de

with Haxn balanced score cards for several Munich restaurants. It%26#39;s a bit outdated (some prices still in DM), but I can recommend the Augustiner Bräustuben , Landsbergerstr.19, for a crackling Haxn.

%26#39;Zum Straubinger%26#39; , Blumenstr. 5, looks good as well, must go there myself someday.

Hi Kwenga

Thanks for the site tip. So there are 4 places ranked higher than Haxnbauer. Must try the top one,

So, Where is Blumenstrasse please?

I note on the photo they serve gravy with the Haxe, doesn%26#39;t that soften the crackling?

Because I can%26#39;t read German I can only look at the ratings.

Wish you could get haxen in the local of a sunday lunchtime! Ah haxen with beer gravy, the trick is to eat the crackling first before the gravy makes it soft.

For a cheap and cheerful haxen which can be hit and miss try the Hofbraukeller at Inner Wiener Str 19, good beer garden out back, had many a happy day and nights there! When they have the specials on for 5 euros or there abouts you can eat really cheap (check out the website online)

Have tried to make a decent haxen at home with mixed results but the ice method does work (if you can find a butcher which does have pork knucle that is)

If anyone is visiting Vienna you must go to the Schweizerhaus at Prata, fantastic haxen with kren and lots of ice cold Budvar, take a look at the pics on the website

@ Stooferuk

Blumenstraße is close to Viktualienmarkt and Marienplatz. You can walk.

I%26#39;m from Munich

You can get %26quot;typical Bavarian food%26quot; in all beer gardens.

Food is good at

Max Emanuel beer garden

www.max-emanuel-brauerei.de/index1.html

The nicest beer gardens are in the Englischer Garten the Seehaus and the Aumeister. Food is comparatively expensive - specially at Seehaus. Don%26#39;t go to the beer garden at the Chinese tower which is a very touristic place.
