We will be using boats and trains the week we are
in Bacharach. Is it a good idea to get a Eurorail twin pass
to use ? We plan to travel the Rein and Mosel and go to
Koln and ??. Will this make traveling easier for us?

It%26#39;s a EURAIL pass - no %26quot;OR%26quot; in the middle.
But the answer is NO. You don%26#39;t need one.
You don%26#39;t even need a German Rail pass if you%26#39;re just staying in Bacharach for a week.
On the days that you wish to take the train, get a Rheinland-Pfalz ticket, 25 Euros, covers up to 5 people, good for travel south along the Rhine (as far as Karlsruhe, I think) and north to Bonn. Also good along the Mosel and Nahe train routes (west to Trier, Saarbrücken, Saarburg, that whole corner ot the country.) Use the RE and RB trains - the high-speed ones are off limits, but they don%26#39;t stop in Bacharach anyway. Anytime on Sat or Sun, after 9 am on weekdays. Buy them from a ticket machine in Bacharach or at any manned station you happen into.
You%26#39;ll need to buy regular tickets additionally for the stretch between Bonn and Cologne, which lies outside the Rheinland-Pfalz zone of validity.
And just buy regular tickets when you make a boat excursion. They aren%26#39;t all that expensive.

Here a map showing the railroads covered by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ticket.
bahn.de/regional/view/mdb/alle/dbregio/ausfl…
If you can present a valid train ticket (e.g. the Rhineland-Palatinate Ticket) you%26#39;ll get a 20% on the KD boat prices.

Rhineland-Palatinate Ticket covers only regional trains.
Select at the DB timetable as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot;.

Inside Rhineland-Palatinate it covers all local public transport. E.g. in Mainz the trams and buses or the buses in Koblenz. This is however not the case in cities outside Rhineland-Palatinate, here the Rhineland-Palatinate Ticket covers only the trains to/from these cities (e.g. to/from Bonn, Wiesbaden, Karlsruhe).

Thanks Russ, I meant to write German rail pass, but good
to know not even that is recommended.
Most of the week will be spent in the one region.

Abalada, appreciate the websites you sent.
That should be a wealth of information!

The German bus companies also do %26#39;gruppen%26#39; tickets, a %26#39;mini gruppen%26#39; covers 5 people and allows you to get on and off as many times as you like during the journey, at least we do!
That is ideal if you wanted to go north to Coblenz, you could spend some time in Boppard etc and see bits you would miss from the train or boat.
My German isn%26#39;t perfect, but the drivers are patient and can normally speak fairly good English.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for another good option. It seems reasonable
that everything is not on a rail line or accessible by
boat. Do you know of the website for the bus schedule?
|||
Sorry don%26#39;t know of any web-sites.
Buses along the riversides seem to run best on school days, weekend frequences are a lot less. Every bus halt has the timetable on or next to it, so just find one on arrival (in the right direction) and note down the times etc.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/e
does cover ALL public transport in Germany. Not just trains, but also trams and buses.
If you go to the %26quot;advanced search%26quot; folder you can even give any address in Germany. That%26#39;s probably the best way as you often have rather the address (e.g. of a hotel) but no idea about the name of the closest bus stop.
