Hello!
There will be a group of around 8 of us intending to spend Christmas 2007 in Berlin. Although I have been to Berlin before, I have never spent Christmas there and I would be grateful if anyone can advise of any hotels which are perfect to stay in during this time. Ideally we would like a hotel whch would have a restaurant open at Christmas Eve or alternatively details of any restaurants in the city which would be open during this time.

It really depends on your budget (and be prepared to pay more in this season): I would either stay near the Memorial Church on the Ku-Damm, or anywhere in Mitte - being close to Christmas markets. Given the lights in the city, rooms with a view from Park Inn would be probably really nice (and down at Alexanderplatz you have a Christmas Market, skating ring, shopping at Galeria Kaufhof, etc.).
As for restaurants, this is not a trivial question at all! I think that most small (family owned) restaurants would be closed. Most definitely that hotel restaurants would be open, and that includes restaurants like Mark Brandeburg (at the Hilton), which is considered very good (I would also try the restaurants at the Westin Grand and the Ritz, noth again considered to be good). BTW, I was once for a business meeting at the Park Inn restaurant and it is not bad either. Another opportunity would be larger restaurants, that have enough staff for Christmas Eve.
Now, I know it is not fair ;-), but I searched Google in German for an answer (if you want to do that too, Heiligabend = %26quot;Christmas Eve%26quot;). The top results have several hotel restaurants, a couple of restaurants offering special charity meals to homeless this restaurant (German) www.restaurant-knese.de - I have no idea if they%26#39;re good.

My preference would be the Radisson SAS hotel on Alexandersquare. I love this hotel plus plenty of restaurants and bars are in walking distance, so is the Hacksche Markt, Oranienburger Str. and all the museums. The big and beautiful Berlin cathedral is less than 2mins walk so you could go there for Xmas eve. Also most rooms overlook the Spree river, which is just so beautiful.
One restaurant you shouldn%26#39;t miss is %26quot;Vau%26quot; near Gendarmenmarkt. A great, great Italian restaurant called 3 Apostel is also just a 10mins walk from your hotel - or a very short cab ride.
The Radisson has got phantastic and stylish rooms, and free high speed internet access!

I stayed at Agon Frankfureter Allee last xmas and found it to be a good deal and convenient to the U-Bahn and trolleys. ee my other posts.

Thanks to those who have replyed so far.
Our budget is around £70 for a double room including breakfast ideally.
Another thing - what time do the buses and U-Bahn trains stop running on the 24th December?
|||
They don%26#39;t. There is public transportation throughout the holiday (reduced in volume, naturally).

A couple more things......
Will there be any shops and museums open in Berlin on the 25th and 26th December or will everything be shut for Christmas?
Whilst in Berlin, it would be nice to go sample traditional German cuisine. Could anyone recommend a Restaurant to try such food?
