Planning on being in Munich + area for 5 days or so before moving on. Seeing both castles is a must, also hoping to see the monastery at Ettal and go up the Zugspitze. Will this work as a general itinerary?
Day 1: Arrive Munich, see a few sites if not totally exhausted.
Day 2: train Munich-Schwangau, see the castles, enjoy scenery and stay in Schwangau or Fussen that night.
Day 3: Bus to Ettal (about 2 hours?), about an hour to see the grounds and grab a beer, bus to GP where we%26#39;ll do the Zugspitze. Relaxing late afternoon + evening.
Day 4: Train GP to Munich, more sightseeing.
Day 5: Train to Prien a Chiemsee, spend most of the day, back on train to Salzburg for the night.
My only worries are about packing too much into the second day (Bus to GP, Ettal + zugspitze). My other question is if the Bayern (?) regional pass will cover the trips to Prien and Salzburg?
Of course, if anyone thinks time would be better spent elsewhere, I%26#39;m all ears...

Yes, you have too much on day two. The Zugspitze is really a days%26#39; worth. Ettal is not far AT ALL from Garmisch. The monastary is nice but it will not take that long to see. Be sure to see Schloss Linderhof. I have been to Garmisch several times. I usually stay at Hotel Aschenbrenner. A very nice day trip is by bus to Ettal and then on to Linderhof. Another day for the Zugspitze and around town. Go to Schwangau/Norschanstein castle either on the way to or from Munich. Getting there early is a must if you want to tour the castles.
Between the two castles, I prefer Linderhof. It is smaller but the only castle that King Ludwig actually lived in. It is awesome!

Busy schedule. Might be a little ambitious. Fussen and the Neuschwanstein castle is a must. In Fussen there is an excellent Italian restaurant..San Marco, right on the pedestrian platz. The hotel Jagerhaus is awesome, albeit a little pricey. From room 62 you have a view from the front window of Neuschwanstein, from the side window Hohenschwangau castle. Ettal is nice, but if you are traveling from Fussen to Garmisch you should find a way to stop at the Wieskirche..on the way to Oberamergau. Garmisch and the Zuqspitz will fill up a good day at least. There is a nice gastehaus near the pedestrian platz, Gastehaus Sissi, which is convenient to train station and town center.
Good luck..

I agree with the previous poster that if you can work in seeing the Wieskirche, do that, but not sure if it%26#39;s feasible without a car. I recommend staying in Fussen vs Schwangau. It%26#39;s bigger and more charming. You need to allot several hours to do the Zugspitze (because of the rides up and down too). You can prob. do it with what you wrote is your plan, going to Ettal first. From where we picked the train up in Garmisch and onto cable car and cogwheel train back it took approximately 3.5-4 hrs. The clouds got so thick that we had no alternative but to take the cogwheel down (the cable car shut down because of impending storms) and that takes a lot longer than the cable car. However, the views are beautiful by cogwheel after you%26#39;re out of the tunnel! It%26#39;s nice to do one mode up and one down, if possible.
