We want to travel to Mittenwald by train form Munich having arrived there by plane. I believe you can travel to a station outside Muncih and change to catch the train to Mittenwald. Further is there a family ticket for this and where is it booked?

Outside Munich? Why not simply take the direct trains from Munich main station to Mittenwald? The trains run hourly, see www.bahn.de

No Family ticket that I know of, but you can use the Bavaria Ticket for 27 Euro - it is valid on all local trains for a whole days in all of Bavaria (e.g. for the train from the airport to Munich as well.). The ticket is valid for up to 5 adults, or two parents and any number of own children.
%26gt;and where is it booked?
Just buy it from a ticke tmachine when you arrive - either at the airport station or in Munich.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/e
From: MUC
To: Mittenwald
%26gt; I believe you can travel to a station outside Muncih and change to catch the train to Mittenwald
Just follow the advices of the DB timetable.
Normally you%26#39;ll have to change either at Munich Hauptbahnhof (main railway station - very central) or Munich-Pasing (which I would not describe as outside Munich).
Best deal will be already mentioned the Bavaria Ticket which covers the complete trip from the airport to Mittenwald. A day ticket covering all local trains in Bavaria (on this route there are only local trains anyway). Validity:
Mo-Fr 9am till 3am next day
Sa,So midnight till 3am next day
