Suggestions for 2 day layover in Frankfurt

We will be jetlagged but are breaking up a long trip with a layover in Frankfurt. Would be grateful for suggestions about where to stay. We would like a really comfortable place, wonderful bed, reasonably good food, quiet, nonsmoking and an outdoor heated pool would be a bonus! Figure we should treat ourselves to assist with the jet lag. Would be most grateful for your suggestions. Thx

Hello, you should let us know your budget and if you need to stay close to Frankfurt.

If so, I would suggest the Villa Kennedy (http://www.villakennedy.com) with their fabulous spa - the pictures online do not look too convincing but the hotel really is perfect for a two day short break. I live in Frankfurt but got a great deal once, it%26#39;s called Executive Break and will get you a very spacious suite as well as a massage for 480 EUR incl. breakfast. No outdoor pool though, as that just simply doesn%26#39;t exist for hotels in Frankfurt.

Let us know your budget and if you are willing to drive (in minutes) and I can let you know further oasises around Frankfurt Airport.

Regards,

Martin

Thanks Martin for your comments.

The hotel sounds wonderful and we will look definitely pursue it as an option. More than we would prefer to pay but when I searched online may be able to get it at a lower price. And if it is all of the things we want then we will just pay the price!

What do you think of driving/training to somewhere outside Frankfurt (from the airport) instead of going into the city? Heidelburg? etc. Wine area?

Would that be quieter and less expensive? If we did that we would like to find a hotel with a pool to recover from our jet lag and before the next leg of our journey to South Africa.

if you are looking for a nice wellness area with a pool I%26#39;d suggest the Lindner Binshof but be aware it is kind of worn down - but that gets you good deals...

Apart from that, I don%26#39;t know of any other hotels in the region. If I would have the money I would go for the Villa Kennedy, either in a suite or in a regular room and make a day trip (you can even cruise down the main river to the rhine). make sure you check out the reviews on tripadvisor to get into the right hotel.

Or if you want to go further down, check out the hotels in Baden-Baden (250 kms from Frankfurt), they have nice hotels as well.

Wiesbaden is a wonderful spa city just 30 minutes away by train. You can find hotels near the thermal baths. One or two are built right over them. You will not be disappointed, as there are many places to visit within a short walk of downtown. I recommend logging into www.wiesbaden.de to see what%26#39;s available. The site has an English option.

You really should go to Cologne! It%26#39;s an hour on the fast ICE train, and you can get the train directly in the airport. The train station in Cologne is directly across from the Cologne Cathedral, and there are several excellent hotels that you can walk to from the train station. You might like the Excelsior Ernst, which is a luxury hotel.

The Cologne Cathedral (Dom)

is a World Heritage Site, there are museums directly behind it; all within short walking distance, including trips on the Rhine. You can easily take the train back to Frankfurt airport, walking directly from your hotel to the train station; the trains are frequent and they will give you a schedule in the train station at the information booth which is right inside the front door. No outdoor heated poll there, but for a hassle free wonderful two days, that%26#39;s my recommendation.

Dear Martin, Lehrer and nkbwilmette,

We cannot thank you enough for your wonderfully differing choices.

These are simply marvelous suggestions which had not occured to us.

We are still working on our final dates of the layover in Frankfurt.

Of course, we never MOVE without reading ALL Tripadvisor ratings and reports! And of course, the input from fellow Tripadvisor travellers effects our final decison.

Oh how I love this site - thanks to wonderful people like you. :)

Will let you know our final plans.

Meantime, our thanks for you great suggestions.

Cheers

I suggest Cologne or Heidelberg. Both are beautiful cities. The Dom in Cologne is breathtaking and the area is lovely and lots of fun. We loved Heidelberg with the castle and the city itself. Since you are not that interesting in Franfkurt those are good choices. Also, if you%26#39;re renting a car you may want to go south and visit Cochen. This is a lovely wine town with a beautiful castle.

We will be in Frankfurt for two days in July. We have never visited so I thought we%26#39;ll give it a try. We are staying at the Marriott. The Meridien Park Hotel (Sheraton property) has decent rates also.

Have fun wherever you go.

Thanks so much for this additional advice. We appreciate your time and suggestions.

Yes we thought that we might like Heidleberg too if we have a couple of days.

But if we have only one night will probably take yours and the advice given to us previously and stay in Frankfurt.

Happy trails

On day one you do the sights of downtown Frankfurt, some shopping, then a stroll thru Sachsenhausen and maybe a Museum of your choice. End the day in a more then 500 years old Beer garden Restaurant in Bornheim %26quot;Gasthaus Sonne%26quot; and have a local cider and some great food.

Start day two with a stroll thru downtown Bad Homburg and the stunning Kurpark. Visit the castle where the wife of the last German emperor used to live. Her rooms do look just like she%26#39;d just left, which was true. You can%26#39;t find a more genuine old royal experience. Then visit the 2,000 years old Roman castle %26quot;Saalburg%26quot; and walk along the %26quot;Limes%26quot;, the wall that was the border of the Roman Empire (Southern side) and the Barbarians on the other side. In the PM visit Hessenpark (google the word) which is both eductational and a lot of fun.

It%26#39;s all in and around the city, no crazy useless things like visiting other cities like Cologne or Heidelberg. There is sooo much to do and see in Frankfurt!

Andreas,

Those suggestions are great. My husband and I will also be in Frankfurt for two days. I was looking for a day trip for day 2 and was thinking of Fulda. How far is Bad Homburg. I assume the easiest is to take the train or is it closer that UBahn or SBah will work?
