Hi, we are visiting Berlin this week (29 May) for 2 days . We lived there during 1993-96 and am looking forward to seeing how it%26#39;s changed. Re eating out, our girls are now 17,15 and 9..would the Hard Rock Cafte, or Planet Hollywood (is it still open?!) or somewhere be any good for the experience? Or are they over priced and not worth it? I remember the hard Rock as having quite a good atmosphere..but that was a long time ago, and without kids! We are also thinking of doing the obvious sights (Brandenburg, Reichstag...also our old flat/house/school!)..are there any more anyone can suggest which are really good? It%26#39;s been a while! We aren%26#39;t plannin on hiring a car I don%26#39;t think...doesn;t seem worth it? Also, heard the 48 hour travel card was a bit of a rip off...anyone know anthing about that? Thanks a lot!

(1) Hard Rock Cafe is still open (Planet Hollywood isn%26#39;t) and is, well, overpriced, but if you%26#39;re looking for an American chain that would appeal to teenagers/children, they all are. Except for HRC, I could recommend Kuchen Kaiser in Oranienplatz (U-Kottbusser Tor): it has menues in English, and for the younger children (say, younger than 13), there%26#39;s a children%26#39;s meal with a %26quot;surprise%26quot; at the end. It really depends on your children - you know them - but there are many good restaurants out there: will they eat Turkish? (very good Turkish food, e.g. at Hasir) Will they eat Chinese? German?
What you should think about, though, is that most restaurants in Berlin haven%26#39;t evolved to have a non-smoking zone (or to be a non-smoking restaurant), and for anyone coming from the civilised world, this might be shocking:

(2) If it is not necessary, don%26#39;t take a car: parking is hell, and public transportation is great.
(3) What else? Don%26#39;t forget to visit the zoo if your children like animals, it is very good; there%26#39;s a Lego/discovery centre at the Sony Centre; try the Technology Museum (if your girls are into it); take them in the Hackescher Hoefe - teenies, esp.girls, love that.

Was only looking at Hard Rock for possible vibe and atmosphere/somewhere they cd say they%26#39;d been? I know there%26#39;s a lot of Italian/pizza..or there was when we lived there, but not thought of Chinese! Any reccomendations for a good...but reasonabley priced if poss ...chinese? I know about the smoking, didn%26#39;t realise it hadn%26#39;t changed in recent years but it doesn%26#39;t bother me. My attitude is if it%26#39;s what happens in that country then I will put up with it...I%26#39;m the visitor. Thanks a lot.

There%26#39;s a great Chinese place (I think the name is something original like %26quot;China Thai Restaurant%26quot;) on Prenzlauer Allee, just next to the Kaackstr. Tram station. It is also quite reasonable.
There are many Chinese restaurants on Kantstr. (as well as many Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc.)
Pizza:
12. Apostel has several venues around town:

There is a Pizza in Prenzlauer Berg (near U-Senefelderplatz) called %26quot;Dou Forni%26quot;. The pizza is very good but the service is horrible ;-)
On Oranienstr (near U-Kottbusser Tor) there%26#39;s a nice pizza place at the corner with Adelbertstr.
A bit out of the way but very friendly (and pizzas are very good): Canale Grande, which is on the Landwerkkanal, between Treptow and Neukoelln.
