Restaurant recommendations

My family and I will soon be visiting Rothenburg

We are staying at the hotel Raidel

As this is Bed and Breakfast, we would welcome some recommendations re reasonably priced/good value places to eat.

Thank you in advance

If you go to http://www.rothenburg.de/ and click on %26quot;English version%26quot;, on the left side is a drop down list. Click on %26quot;eat and drink%26quot; for a page of restaurants in town, many with their webpages. Not all the restaurants are shown, but a number are.

We%26#39;ve been to Rothenburg many times and our favorite restaurant is at the Klosterstuble. Very good food, reasonably priced and a nice atmosphere. There is at outdoor terrace with some good views also. To get there, from the town square walk down Herrngasse in the direction of the castle gate (castle gardens). Just past the Franciscan Church, turn left. The restaurant is one-half block down on the right.

Another nice place with good food at reasonable prices is the Kartofflestuble at the Gasthaus Rodertor. It is just outside the ciity walls. Exiting the city by the Roder Gate, it is about 200 feet ahead on the left. Again, a nice terrace and beergarden if you prefer to eat outside.

Rothenburg seems to have a wealth of reasonably priced restaurants. We ate at the Gasthof goldener Greifen and the Hotel Gerberhaus, found the quality and the price of the meal good.

Thank you to you both

Your help and advice are much appreciated

I recommend that you go %26quot;To Hell,%26quot; or in German, Zur Höll. It is the oldest building in Rothenburg (the website says ca 900), and has good food and drink.

I don%26#39;t know if this wine list has been updated...it%26#39;s unusual to see a 1999 white wine on a menu around here! However, if you like white wine, I recommend a silvaner trochen, which is a typical Franken wine. Judging from the wineries listed on the menu, %26quot;Hell%26quot; is a good tavern for wine selections. Rather than getting a .25 liter (viertel), ask if they will serve you an achtel (an eighth of a liter). You%26#39;ll be able to sample more that way.

While in Rothenburg, don%26#39;t forget to admire the Tilman Riemenschneider Holy Blood wooden alter in the Jacobskirche (1501), an absolute must, as Riemenschneider is to wood carving what Michaelangelo is to painting/sculpting.

If you amble up the Romantic Road to Creglingen, Riemenschneider%26#39;s Altar of Maria is just as magnificent...must see if you%26#39;re in the area.

I agree with the posts about Hotel Restaurant Klosterstüble. (€10–15, Heringsbronnengasse 5) Ask for their recomendations and you can%26#39;t go wrong.

Altstadt-Café at Alter Keller 8, is very near Hotel Raidel, (€5–10) inexpensive, and traditional. We sat outside, ordered things we couldn%26#39;t pronouce and loved it.

Since we%26#39;ve traveled with teens and college students, another recomendation if you%26#39;ve had enough typical German quisine, is the Italian restaurant, Pizzeria Roma on Galgengasse. It%26#39;s inexpensive, and a nice change of pace. (€6.50 pizza, pastas) Don%26#39;t go there if you want to get in and out very quickly.

Another fun place:

Altfränkische Weinstube am Klosterhof restaurant. (€5–11, off Klingengasse at Klosterhof 7) The only table left on a Wednesday night was the ECC table. (English Conversation Club)

Turned out to be a riot.

There were Germans there from 17 to 83 and English speaking travelers and college students from all over the US. We talked about some German history with the %26quot;old guys%26quot; and some town gossip with the younger people who worked in the hotels and were practicing their English. We had a party of 4 and interspersed ourselves between %26quot;locals%26quot;. The group at the table rotated as people got off work, went to work or had other plans. This might be more interesting depending on the age of your family.
