Help on places to visit

Myself and 2 teenagers will be arriving at Dusseldorf In Dec 2007. We have been to Germany several times (actually lived in the Norvenich Germany area for 4 years) but we always seem to visit the same places - Koln, Black Forest, Garmisch, etc...all south. I%26#39;d liked to do something different this time. We are going to head to Amsterdam for a few days (will be there for New Years). We love the Christmas Markets so we%26#39;ll still do Koln for 2 days but need ideas on where to go from there. We have 8 days to visit in Germany. We love places where my daughter can do her photography - history, artsy, people. We love to also shop but do like the country side too. I thought about the Rhine area as it%26#39;s been years since I%26#39;ve been there but not sure how much is there for 2 active teenagers. Thoughts on other areas - Berlin? Dresden? Usually I rent a car but am thinking of the train this time depending on itinerary.

I%26#39;d love some ideas - unique areas (non-touristy would be great too).

Thank you so much for your help.

Hello,

Having just spent a week in Berlin, I would thoroughly recommend it! There are loads of really interesting museums %26amp;amp; historical sights and of course because it is a large city it is easy to find places that are not so touristy as well. Your daughter will have many opportunities for some fantastic photographs. I would recommend exploring the different parks %26amp;amp; platz%26#39;s throughout the city. Each has it%26#39;s own character.

If you base yourself in Berlin, there are a few places you can visit on day trips. Potsdam in particular is beautiful, with a wonderful park to lose yourself in!

Have you decided on accomodation? I stayed in a lovely Bed and Breakfast in Berlin in a quiet area just a few minutes by U-Bahn from the city centre. It was fantastic as I could see all the sights and go out for the nightlife if I wanted, but then when I needed to sleep, I could. (I have stayed on main streets in large cities before.... never again!). The owner Andreas is very helpful and knowledgable about the local area and would be able to give you even more hints about what to do. You can contact him through the website: www.berliner-bed-and-breakfast.de He speaks excellent English.

Cheers,

Megan

P.S.....

As I am on the move, I don%26#39;t have everything from my Berlin trip to hand.... but I will get back to you if I remember anything more specific, or feel free to send me a message :-)

Megan, thank you so much. I am going to suggest Berlin to my daughter - I love new adventures and this sounds great!! Any additional info you can provide will be wonderful. Since we have some time until we go there%26#39;s no hurry - so if you get time that would be great. I%26#39;ll be checking on the B %26amp; B you suggested as well. My daughter and I love Germany so we are counting down the days.....

Berlin, Dresden plus Saxony Switzerland

would fit perfectly to you interests.

Dresden has one of the oldest Christmas Markets

And for country side you can combine Dresden easily with the Saxon Switzerland - Elbe Sandstone Mountains

Or a visit to some of the smaller Christmas markets in towns of the ore mountains (a core region for Christmas traditions).

If you had your choice where would you stay for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day? Thanks again for help!!!

Dresden is a very good choice for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Attend the service in the Kreuzkirche in the late afternoon on Christmas Eve or 6 am (!) on Christmas Day. Both are amazing for ambience/quality of music.

Like abalada suggested Berlin/Dresden makes a good combination. Try to include a day trip to a small town in the nearby Erzgebirge mountains where the wooden Christmas items are manufactured. Perfect Christmas spirit.

Train is sufficient except for the day trip to the mountains. If the planning gets more into details I can come up with more ideas.

Düsseldorf is well worth staying for a night. Book a hotel in the Media Harbour district. Plenty of restaurants and bars are in the area. Take elevator up the Rhine Tower for a breathtaking view of the city and how the Rhine meanders thru it. Also vist Königsallee for a shopping trip. Düsseldorf is Germany%26#39;s No.1 tourist destination for visitor from Korea and Japan because of the shopping mile. Then visit Altstadt. The next day do a day trip to Schloss Dyck (you can google it). The most romantic water chateau with spectacular gardens around...
