Heidelberg Castle

I%26#39;m bringing a group of high school students to Germany in a few weeks and we will be travelling through Heidelberg on our way North. We plan to stop into Heidelberg for dinner and to see the castle, but it now looks as if we will be arriving around 5:00pm-- after the castle has closed.

Does anyone know if we can still walk up and take pictures? How close can you get after closing? I%26#39;d still like the kids to get some view of it...

Thanks!

I think the Castle closes as 6pm during the summer. Maybe you will just make it if you arrive in Heidelberg at 5. You can walk along the shopping street in Heidelberg. I think it%26#39;s called Bergheimer Strasse. Once you get to the end you can stop and take some pretty decent pictures of the castle up on the hill. You can still drive up there and get some pictures of the back of the castle.

The castle gardens are open and free of charge, there%26#39;s also a cobblestone path that leads up to the castle from the city center. You can get pretty close and walk around the castle, with a good view down to the river and the old town. Worth a stroll even if you can%26#39;t get into the castle. Sometimes there%26#39;s a special %26#39;night tour%26#39; of the castle taking you into some spooky corners with some %26#39;ghosts%26#39; telling their tales, but this is probably only available in german.

I don%26#39;t know when your trip is or was, but don%26#39;t miss the upper terraces of the castle for views of the city and river. It%26#39;s free and open.

You can get great photos from below the castle at Kornmarkt, a square with a statue of the Madonna on Hauptstrasse (not Bergheimer that goes west from Bismarckplatz and not close to the castle at all). There is a funicular from the town to the castle that also goes all the way up to the Koernigstuhl (King%26#39;s Chair) for really great views of the river and the old town. I would walk the steps from town if you were only going to the castle. The terrace is free, getting into the castle courtyard costs and not worth it. The castle%26#39;s appeal is it%26#39;s facade, the inside is not much, a wine cellar and apothecary museum.
