Castle/River Day Cruise?

We%26#39;ll be staying in Freiburg for a few weeks, and one of the things I%26#39;d like to do is a casual day-cruise looking at castles from the river, and hearing about their history. Can anyone suggest where would be the closest place to Freiburg? And if not necessarily the closest, then the most popular and enjoyable?

I%26#39;m assuming the Rhine, but perhaps there are other river-cruises elsewhere that are just as enjoyable? We could certainly drive further into Switzerland or France too, but would prefer to stay in Germany. Thanks!

The Rhine River between Rudesheim and Koblenz sounds like what you are interested in, but it%26#39;s quite a ways to the north. You can also take a boat upstream from Heidelberg on the Neckar River to see castles. I personally would rent a canoe(s) and go on the idyllic Grosse Lauter River through the Schwaebsche Alb which has one of the highest concentrations of castle ruins in Germany. www.muensingen.de www.schwaebischealb.de

For river cruises and castles I would suggest a trip to Koblenz which stands at the junction of the Mosel/Rhine rivers. You can get get a trip that last about 3 hours up to one that lasts all day. Trouble is, Koblenz is several hundred miles from Freiburg and not really do-able in one day.

My suggestion is that you drive to Constance and catch a boat to the beautiful flower island of Mainau (also reachable by road). I would also recommend a visit to Meersburg which has a castle perched on the edge of the lake/in the town.

Also, while in Freiburg take a train/or drive up to Lake Titisee. It can be crowded in the summer but it has a certain charm and there is a good walk around the lake.

I hope you enjoy Freiburg and the surrounding area. It has a lot to offer.
