Wherever you ask, you will get another answer.

In Düsseldorf : Schlösser Alt

In Cologne : Früh Kölsch

In Ruhr Area : Königs Pilsner

Mosel area : Bitburger Pils

there are a lot more!! every german region has a special beer

Hi,

After a comprehensive survey (i.e. I asked my husband), the results are in! He reckons that the best Pils is Königs Pilsner and the best Weis beer is Fransikaner Weissen. Of course that is only his opinion and depends on what type of beer of like best.

And then the next problem is whether you can get it in Brisbane or not. If you are over in Germany, you should remember that most bars and pubs will only have one brand of each beer type. So you just ask for a pils or a weissen or an alt (but never in Cologne, there you can%26#39;t get alt only Kölsch) and they will bring you whatever brand they have. Look at the glass or the coaster and it should tell you what kind of beer they serve round here.

I hope that%26#39;s helped :-)

There are lots of German beers, many of them quite local which wouldn%26#39;t be the case unless people perceived them as better than the more well known %26quot;national brands%26quot;. Look at www.braugasthoefe.com for a listing of small breweres that also provide food and accomodation. The one listed in Ummendorf has excellent food and beer, and their special Placidus Cobaldus dark beer is my favorite beer, normally available only in liter bottles but also in a special 3 liter special presentation magnum. They also sell their own chocolates with beer or beer brandy centers that are quite good. Some types of beer are only seasonal, so you can also have the opportunity to try these.

I would try beers from the smaller local breweres, if available, as some might be a real treat. There are a few breweries that I wonder how they can stay in business, but tastes vary.

Most popular. There are statistics. But

a) the biggest breweries make at max good but no excellent beers

b) a big marketing budget says nothing about the beer itself

Rule of thumb: try the smaller local breweries you have never heard of before.

Rothaus (Baden State Brewery, in the middle of nowhere in the Black Forest)

rothaus.de/html/01brauerei/01_brauerei_fs.htm

Weltenburger (best enjoyed at the lovely sceneray of its origins, near Regensburg)

and if we are already at monastry breweries, here 2 more ones worth a visit not just for the beer.

Andechs (on a hill above lake Ammersee close to Munich)

Kreuzberger (on the Kreuzberg mountain (928 m) in nothern Bavaria, my personal favorite, difficult to reach by public transport)

Besides Kreuzberger the others can be also found sometimes in pubs and beverages shops elsewhere in Germany.
