pros/cons of munich hostel for family of 4

Does anyone recommend staying at a youth hostel for our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids, age 3 and 7)? for example, too noisy, too dirty, too far from town, or ??? What hostel would you recommend in Munich? thanks!

Most of the 600 German HI-afilliated (look for DJH) are very family-oriented; after school groups, families seem to be their primary clients. Family rooms are very common, almost always with private bath. They are generally clean, modern facilities - some very impressive. I%26#39;ve used them often in my travels. We stayed at the castle-hostel in Diez (near Koblenz) which was recently remodeled - WOW. Some are located at the edge of town for recreational purposes. Others, like the one in Nuremberg, are steps from the center of things - just depends on the hostel%26#39;s purpose.

During the school year when school groups book for a week at a time, the hostels can be very loud. After mid-July, and over Christmas holidays, you can generally expect a peaceful visit.

I%26#39;m not familiar enough with Munich%26#39;s hostels nowadays to make any rec%26#39;s for you. I do know the Munich Neuhausen hostel is fairly close in.

Another economical option in Germany for families is an apartment. With equipped kitchens, you can reduce meal expenses and fix food kids want to eat. They%26#39;re often located on the periphery or nearby towns, but they can be more peaceful, and getting into town by S-Bahn or regional train is usually simple and fairly cheap. Here%26#39;s one example on the S6 line:

You could look at Landsberg, Diessen (small town on Ammersee lake) Herrsching, Andechs, and other communities too.

Here%26#39;s an excellent resource for places to stay in Bavaria, including Munich:

Approx. 15-20 minutes by public transport to the city centre.

Nice location.

There are two hostels on Senefelderstrasse, in the Hauptbahnhof (= main station) area . Don%26#39;t know if they are good, but the location is excellent : the train station is very close and going to the old town is a 10 mns walk .

The Neuhausen Youth Hostel is very nice. I stayed there several times in my backpacking carefree days. It is an easy tram ride from the center of town. I think you can book online.

German Youth Hostels are very family-oriented.

I wouldn%26#39;t recommend staying near the train station. (Yucko!) The Rotkreuzplatz, where the Neuhausen Youth Hostel is located, is a much better area.
