Hey all, first time european traveler so any help would be appreciated...
Looking to book Munich hbf to Venice SL overnight train on July 10, 2007. Was looking at bahn.de and liked the time and price, but wnated to consult here first. Is this the best site to use? Is it secure and no gimics?
Thanks

Do you really believe that some third party site would be more secure than the site actually run by the organisation (Deutsche Bahn) that owns the trains and the track?

I%26#39;ll reply in a more direct fashion; I%26#39;ve used bahn.de to purchase tickets directly [mailed to the U.S. in the past and printable now] and they were excellent. Enjoy trip

altamiro should be considerate in making comments to posters who are not as knowledgable as he/she about the information requested. It sometimes has happened to me, when I inquire about a place I am unfamiliar with, a TA %26quot;expert%26quot; will act uppity about it.
How was this person in Texas to know bahn.de is the official railroad site? Sei hoeflich, bitte!

OK, sorry. My anti-grumpiness pills ran out :-)

Thank you!
What about other train tickets.. we were going to wait until we got to Europe to buy the other ones because we didn%26#39;t want to be limited by a Eurail pass. Is that a good idea or should we buy them all now? Do trains generally fill up? We are traveling between major cities mainly. (Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Venice, Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre, Milan)
If anyone wants to comment on those feel free to send me a message.
Thanks

There is no single answer to that. Each national railway has it´s own rules and these differ in regard to different train types.
Night trains do fill up as the number of tickets is always restricted. With daytime trains it differs.

OK; I see the cities.
Germany %26amp; Austria: trains cannot fill up, it doesn´t matter whether you buy now or 5 min before departure
Italy: Eurostar trains require reservation, so best get the tickets a few days in advance. Intercity trains don´t require reservations but it is highly recommended to do s. With regional trains, there is no difference.

There are often financial benefits to booking early and on night trains it is essential as they often fill up. Again booking early on night trains can lead to significant benefits.
Always try and book with the national railway company rather than being fleeced by Rail Europe.
A good site for informaiton is www.seat61.com, it has contact details for all the national railways

Also there is a great daily train from Munich to Roma which passes through the Alps, and calls at Verona, Florence and Rome. I booked this in advance last year and got a price of 19€
