The only one who can charge a percentage is your credit card org (VISA) or your bank. Not the merchants.

However, DON´T allow the merchants to charge your card in US$. You pay twice for currency conersion. Tell them that you want your card to be charged in Euro.

Thanks for the info very helpful

Some credit cards charge as much as 4.5% of each foreign transaction, so you may need to read you credit card agreement to find out before you go spending a lot on the plastic.....

I%26#39;d personally suggest you get Euros before you leave.....I know that American Express and Travelex sell Euros online.

Here%26#39;s a link for travelex.....once you get to the website, look at the bottom left where it says Foreign Currency online.

Sorry,.....here%26#39;s that link:

http://www.travelex.com/us/

Why do it beyond the emergency 100 Eur for the airport? That´s what ATMs on every corner are for.

Capitol One charges 0% foreign transaction fee.

They don%26#39;t charge you a fee in the shops where you pay but if I (German) use my credit card abroad the credit card company charges me 1 or 2%.
