Help with Itinery

My son is in Leipzig at the university for 2 months. We are sending his fiance the first week in July. He is so busy with work, that I am trying to come up with an itinery for the two of them. Never being to Europe, I am suffering with helping them out. She flies into Liepzig on July 3 at 8:55am and departs from Liepzig on July 9. This is an early honeymoon present from us. Can anyone suggest some must do%26#39;s. We are not opposed to traveling by train to other areas for days. Any suggestions very appreciated.

I think two or three days in Leipzig are sufficient. You could easily do day trips on the other days.

Well worth to see are Dresden, Meissen, Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Berlin ... even the small towns in the Harz mountains like Quedlinburg and Wernigerode are easily to reach.

Or you could base yourself in one of the cities like Berlin or Dresden for two or three nights and explore these and the surroundings more in detail.

There is too much to see and do in the region. It%26#39;s hard to advise properly without knowing your interests.

They enjoy hiking and the outdoors.

As they like hiking and being outdoors you should definitely include Saxon Switzerland (near Dresden): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saxon_Switzerland

and the Harz mountains into your intenary:

What is the distance from Leipzig to these places. What would be the best method of transportation. How long at each place and hotel recommendations would be great. Thank you so much!

If the kids are into hiking then DEFINITELY go to the National Park Saxon Switzerland, a few miles south of Dresden. It%26#39;s hikers/climbers paradise! :-)

As suggested before, Dresden is a city not to miss when in Leipzig. So I suggest you combine the trip Dresden/Saxon Switzerland and stay either in Dresden (if you like a bit of nightlife/evening entertainment/culture) or a town in Saxon Switzerland (if you%26#39;re more into the nature experience and don%26#39;t care for nightlife). Both are only 45 minutes max. by train (commuter train S1, runs every half hour till late) apart. About 3 or 4 nights seem sufficient to me.

The suggestions for accommodations totally depend on your price range - please give an idea! Everything is available - from small and inexpensive B%26amp;Bs to expensive luxury Grand Hotels with spa.

PS: the travelling time Leipzig - Dresden by (slow regional) train is about 1.5 hours. A %26#39;Saxony ticket%26#39; which is valid for a group up to five travellers costs 26 Euro (valid one day).

I agree. Focus on the Eastern Part of Germany and do Wittenberg, Dresden, Swiss Saxony (Canyon), Potsdam and Berlin.

You need 2 full days for Berlin minimum, one full day for Potsdam and the castles. 1 day Dresden, 1 day river cruise from Dresden to the Swiss Saxony and canyon climbing. Wittenberg can be done as day-trip from Leipzig or in between Leipzig and Berlin.

Here a railroad map showing the three states (Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia) which are covered by the Saxony Ticket.

Apart from Berlin one can reach all these places on the Saxony Ticket.

Andreas US Ger- I like your itintery advise. I have told my son about it he sounds excited about it, however, he has questions about maybe visiting Prague. Is there any hiking there? The hiking in Swiss Saxony sounds good. Which would you reccomend? Thank you so much.
