berlin trip review

I just returned after spending 3 nights in Berlin. I was vacationing with my elderly parents.

We had a very nice time. I live in New York and haven%26#39;t travelled a lot (so do not have many benchmarks) but have visited a few famous cities.

Most neighborhoods of Berlin are live fairly late at night. This is in contrast to Prague and Vienna, which we also visited this trip.

The food and service in Berlin is generally very good. The prices arent rip off either, and compare with those in Prague.

In terms of sights, most of the Berlin attractions probably wont make it to the global top 5, but are still very good (I was amazed by the Pergamon Musuem, though). This is great because you will not feel that the sights are a waste of time if you decide to see them, but you dont have to worry about doing all of them.

While public transport in Berlin is excellent, the city is fairly spread out. This distributes the throng of tourists, and doesnt make the city look extremely touristy. Also, many attractions are not right at a subway stop. So having a good map is important. Also, doing a hop-on hop-off bus tour is a reasonable idea if you are short on time... most tours are similar, and some cheaper and more expensive buses even allow passengers to board either bus!

If you are an arts/ history buff, the museums in Berlin are excellent and cheap. You get a fair variety of cuisine at reasonable prices. Accomodation and airport transfers are also good. People are friendly and nice... not very stiff, particular and finicky, as I had incorrectly feared. I followed the itineraries suggested here, and found it great.

Thanks for the report. Always good to hear that people liked their time in Berlin

Good report, thanks for sharing. The only thing I don%26#39;t understand is how the single one symbol of the end of the cold war, the end of a constant nuclear threat, the end of oppression of millions and millions of people, the Brandenburg Gate, would not make it to your global top 5 sights...

Just out of interest: What are your top 5 global sights? Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, Grand Canyon, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building? Nothing half as exciting and of half the global impact has happened at either one of those...
