Trip report Dresden

4 days sightseeing in and around Dresden at the beginning of May: Since the weather was excellent and my partner is not much into museums this is more about the %26#39;outdoor%26#39; things in Dresden. The city itself is great for walking (old town and new town) and has tons of fine buildings and pretty places along the river, so the first evening was filled with a walking tour around the main sights of the old town. On the second day we visited the Schloss Wackenbarth vinery in Radebeul. We did some hiking in the vineyards, had lunch in the restaurant of the vinery and made a tour including some wine tasting. For people interested in wine this is really worth seeing, it%26#39;s a combination of a renovated palace and a new building for the working vinery. The food in the restaurant is very good, as is the wine. Back in Dresden we visited the Frauenkirche, then took a tram towards the TV-Tower and walked back to the %26#39;Blaues Wunder%26#39; bridge along the river (the riverside is great for hiking and biking, and the little ferries across the river are included in the public transport day tickets). Close to the bridge are 2 cablecars (over 100 years old) which will get you up the hillside for a great view (discount for public transport ticket holders). The next day was hiking day in the Elbe sandstone mountains. Flippin%26#39; fabulous indeed, even for those not into hiking a visit to the %26#39;Bastei%26#39; is recommended. For the last day we took the paddle wheel steamer to the Pillnitz castle with its wonderful castle garden (due to the warm and early spring everything was in full bloom). We did a guided tour of the castle, and although there%26#39;s not much left in terms of interior design splendor the guide did a great job to bring the history of the place alive. Back in Dresden we popped in %26#39;Pfund%26#39;s Molkerei%26#39; (dairy), which is on the agenda of probably every organized tour of Dresden and as such filled with busloads of tourists. The shop is charming nonetheless. We had some coffee and cake upstairs (no impressive design here, but excellent cheesecake). All in all a great trip, Dresden has something for everyone, cultural and natural beauty, lots of pretty cafes, restaurants and beergardens and friendly folks all around. Two thumbs up for Dresden and the Dresdners!

Thanks for the great report which has given me some idea of less obvious things to do if we go to Dresden this summer, which is on the cards (flights to Berlin already booked).

I was in Dresden 1988 (on a day trip from Leipzig) so will be very interested to see it in its new splendour.

Excellent post, kwenga, I shall certainly follow some of your ideas - especially the cheese cake! (You can%26#39;t get it here in Italy - I%26#39;m always on the look out...) Did you visit any other good places to eat?

I concur that Dresden was very interesting; I didn%26#39;t get out into the country (it was just before New Year%26#39;s), but passed through Swiss Saxony on the train to Prague and it looks beautiful. I did go to Pfund%26#39;s and found it pretty cool. The new part of town has som nice rstrts. and bars, though I%26#39;m at a loss to name any specific places.

Have fun!

Well, we certainly did!

Dresden is wondeful, the people are the most courteous and friendly I have met in Europe, Swiss Saxony made for a couple of beautiful walks, the hotel was lovely, we ate in several excellent restaurants, the shopping is great - if you come from a wee town like I do - and, best of all, I finally heard my favourite choral work live in a stupendous perfomance in the sober and austere Kreuzkirche!

What a trip - thank you Dresden!
