I just booked a round-trip flight to Munich at the end of August.
Arriving Day 1 early afternoon
Leaving Day 6 late morning
This will be my first time to the Bavaria region and I am traveling with my 61-year-old mother. We want to spend time only in Munich and Salzburg instead of swallowing the entire region in such a short time.
Given this condition, my question is - what would be a good time split between the 2 cities? Shall I go straight to Salzburg right off the plane, or in the middle of the trip, or keep it to the end?
Thanks!

Put Salzburg in the middle of the trip. That way you don%26#39;t have a rushed rail trip on the day you are leaving.

Salzburg, in the middle or end. At the end would have the advantage that you can take the train from Salzburg to either Munich Hbf. (Hauptbahnhof) or Munich Ostbahnhof (east station) and get the S-Bahn to the airport. Unless your plane leaves at the crack of dawn, you can save yourself one hotel unpacking by staying the last night in Salzburg.
To check RR schedules look at www.bahn.de In your case, I would forsake the Bayernkarte discount and take whataver train is fastest. If your mother is less than sprightly, go to Muncih Hbf. and take the S-Bahn from there. Since the Hbf. is a head station (i.e. they turn the trains around) this will give you plenty of time to get off the train.

Thanks both TelePort and Treplow. I am considering taking the early morning train to Salzburg on Day 5 and stay overnight, then headback to Munich for the 11:50am flight on Day 6. That will give me one full day in Salzburg and minimal packing and unpacking. If I decide to cut out some stuffs from Munich I would prefer to stay 2 nights in Salzbug.

If you don%26#39;t do museums you can see the sights of Munich in a day. You can do Garmisch, Bad Tölz in a day trip from Munich. Füssen and Neuschwanstein as well as Königsee and Obersalzberg are on your way to Salzburg.
