We will be visiting Berlin the end of August for three nights. Can anyone recommend a four to five star hotel? We appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

I can recommend the Derag Hotel Grosser Kurfuerst near Museum Island. If you look at %26quot;Berlin Hotels%26quot; to the left of this page it%26#39;s ranked at number 20.
It%26#39;s a four star hotel and the suites and apartments are very comfortable.
We%26#39;ve stayed here four times and normally have an apartment as we have two children. It%26#39;s right next to Markisches Museum U-Bahn and about a 20 minute walk to the station at Alexanderplatz.
It%26#39;s very convenient for Museum Island, boat trips along the Spree, the Television Tower, the nearby NIkolaiviertal (which is full of little bars, restaurants and shops) and not far from the major sights such as the Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden and Potsdamer Platz.
The staff at the hotel are very friendly and there%26#39;s a lovely bar and great restaurant.

Thanks for your suggestion, I will most certainly check it out. Have a nice day.

There are several nice ones.
In West Berlin you can try the Hotel Steigenberger, close to KaDeWe, which is probably the ultimate department store in Europe. Steigenberger is somewhat different from other 4 or 5 stars in that it is not an international chain.
In East Berlin, close to the center, there%26#39;s Hotel Adlon, but that might be a bit expensive. If you can afford it, go for it.
I keep referring to Berlin%26#39;s official tourism internet channel, www.visitBerlin.tv because it has so much up to date information about Berlin-- including a show about the top hotels there.
Best,
Sebastian

Several great 5* hotels:
Potsdamer Platz:
- The Marriott Potsdamer Platz
- The Ritz Potsdamer Platz
East:
- The Hotel de Roma in Babelplatz
- Hilton in Gendarmenmarkt
- Westin Grand on Friedrichstr/Unter-den-Linden
- Hotel Lux near Alexanderplatz
- Adlon, already mentioned before - the most famous hotel in Berlin (most expensive, too, I think...)
- Radisson SAS at the Dom Aquaree (this is the hotel that has a huge aquarium at the centre)
- Swissotel near the Kudamm
- Intercontinnental near the Zoo

have you checked out the TripAdvisor hotel reviews? Alot of the four to five star hotels are rated high in the popularity index, so you don%26#39;t have to go too far down the list to get some ideas. We are staying at the Grand Hyatt in August, but it%26#39;ll be our first trip, so can%26#39;t tell you yet if we made the right choice!

I am just back from Berlin, and although I didn%26#39;t stay at the new Ellington Hotel around the corner from the KaDeWe, I did visit for coffee in the lobby with colleagues.
It%26#39;s a stunningly brigh and modern establishment, and well worth a look-see if the rooms look too compact for your taste. Perhaps they have a small suite within your five-star price range. Although it%26#39;s rated three star, it sure looks a lot nicer than you might imagine that would mean.
The location can%26#39;t be beat, with Wittenbergplatz U bahn around the corner and the Zoo station within easy walking distance.
The one review in the forum of a stay at the Ellington was extremely positive.

I am trying to decide between the Ritz and the Regent for my trip in Sept. Any suggestions? What kind of weather can I expect, Sept 1-5. Is the Adlon better than these?

If you want to have a TOP location go for the MeliĆ” hotel on Friedrich strasse almost opposite the Friedrich strasse Bahnhof for all you U and S bahn connections but hey you hardly need to take the subway or bus as the Reichstag ( 11mins ), The Friedrich strasse upmarket shops ( 6 mins ), the Unter den Linden ( 5 mins ), the Museum Island ( 10 mins ) , the Brandenburger gate ( 15 mins ) and postdammer Platz ( 22 mins ) are within walking distance and if you are fed up walking why waste time on public transport just take a taxi. They are cheap and all drivers are excellent ( well that is my experience )
The MeliĆ” is a 4 star hotel. Brand new. Spacious rooms as you Americans are used too and staff helpful. They are having a sale now and a room ( ALL rooms are the same spacious size ) can be had for €79 including breakfast for 2.
Enjoy Berlin it is a great town

(1) Melia - join the recommendation
(2) Ritz or Regent - either way, great hotels. IMHO Regent is a bit better because it is in Gendarmenmarkt, which is:
- central
- beautiful (the most beautiful place in Berlin if you ask me, or at least one of them)
- quiet(!) (despite being so central)
Potsdamer Platz is much more plastic-version of Berlin, with mostly shopping around (although the %26quot;Kulturforum%26quot; museums are there, and the Brandenburg Gate is just around the corner).

Thanks again for your wonderful suggestions. We did book the Melia on Friedrichstrasse with Hotels.com, mainly because it is new, its location and has apparently a panorama restaurant on the eight floor. Unfortunately, we did not get the bargain ynguy received. As a matter of fact, Thursday is $175.00, Friday $175.00 (went in the meantime to $390) and Saturday is $350.00, all without breakfast. What a difference a day makes. Yes, skatedancer I am a member of Tripadvisor and check them regularly. Thanks again
Erika
