Bingen or Rudesheim?

We are traveling from Munich by train and want to get off to ride the Rhine by boat to Boppard. Which town should we plan on getting off, Bingen or Rudeheim? Would in be a 2 hours ride to Boppard from either?

The boats to Boppard call in both towns. First in Rüdesheim, 10

minutes later in Bingen.

Bingen is better connected by train, thus I would choose Bingen if you don%26#39;t want to do there anything else than getting on a boat.

That%26#39;s a 2 hr. 20 minute ride between Bingen and Boppard. If you%26#39;re short on time, you could also see the castles - and several more that you will miss if you stop in Boppard - by taking a train between Ruedesheim and Koblenz instead. This takes one hour on the RB trains, which stop in every town along the way, allowing you a good look.

The extra time could be used to your advantage to have a close-up look at one of the castles - Marksburg in Braubach, the only Rhine castle that was never destroyed by French marauders and which has regular tours of about 45 min. in length (very few of the castles are not open to the public.) It%26#39;s a very good look at medieval life, and if you%26#39;re going to see castles, you should check out the interior of at least one of them. Drop bags at TI office. Walk from the station a couple of blocks, then a small shuttle takes you up to the castle hilltop from the town center. Proceed from Braubach by train to Koblenz and then on to Boppard or whatever your destination is.

I%26#39;ve done the boats 3 times and found them to be overcrowded and sometimes downright uncomfortable and hot in the summer months - one of those experiences that sounds good in concept, and is maybe okay as part of a longer stay, but if short on time, I wouldn%26#39;t spend it on one of those boats.

Have a good trip

Oops. I meant to say that very few of the castles ARE open to the public.

Thank you for your quick responce.

Could you also tell me when I can buy a train ticket to travel across the border into Holland. I found out online that is cheaper to buy a 4 day pass for Germany via the railway system for 4 days and then buy a point to point form the Germany border to Amsterbam. Can I do this %26quot;on board%26quot; or do I have to get off the train at the border and buy it?

%26gt; Can I do this %26quot;on board%26quot;

yes

%26gt; or do I have to get off the train at the border and buy it?

No. The train does not stop at the border.

Best will be to buy the tickets from the border to Amsterdam at a railway station, e.g. in Munich.

a) if you buy on board this will be more expensive

b) one of the few ticket types you cannot buy online, the border tariff points are displayed in the schedules, but you cannot buy online tickets with them as departure %26quot;station%26quot;.
