I am a recent college graduate and I%26#39;m planning on doing some travelling in Germany this summer. One of my stops will be in Freiburg, but I won%26#39;t be able to spend too much time there. I%26#39;ll have a night, one full day, and then a half day. This is the only non-urban area I%26#39;ll be visiting and I%26#39;m looking to do some hiking during the fulll day, but don%26#39;t really know where to do this. I also want to see the Hollental, maybe go climbing in/around it. Any recommendations about hiking locations and how to get in the Hollental would be appreciated. Also, what else is there to do in the town?

Cathedral definitly, you can also climb the tower of it.
You can buy a 24 hour ticket for the RFV network (Regio24 EUR 9,60).

This tickets covers the trams and buses in Freiburg, the (half-hourly) trains to Titisee through the Höllental. And everything else shown on the above linked map.
For hiking I would recommend the Feldberg, the highest peak of the Black Forest (1493 m).
DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/e
From: Freiburg
To: Feldberg-Bärental
To: Feldbergerhof
To: Rinken
Feldberg-Bärental station is 967 m, the highest located normal gauge station in Germany.
Feldbergerhof and Rinken Jägerhof are located at approx. 1200 m.
Freizeitbus 9007 Hinterzarten to Rinken Jägerhof is not covered by the Regio24 ticket. EUR 1,80 extra.

I would recommend a tour Rinken Jägerhof - Feldberg - Bärental.
